On July 13th, 2025, at approximately 2:45 a.m.; RCMP officers, EHS and the local fire department responded to a motor vehicle collision in the 700 block of South Road, Gabriola Island, BC. Officers learned that a Gray Hyundai Accent with one occupant was travelling at a high rate of speed when it lost control near Crestwood Road and struck a telephone pole.
The lone occupant of the vehicle was identified by police as a 23-year-old local resident who showed signs of impairment. Due to his injuries, the male was taken to the Nanaimo Regional Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police also attended the hospital where a blood demand was made. The driver was later found to be impaired over twice the legal limit.
The 23-year-old male was later arrested for impaired driving and has since attended his first court appearance.
The Gabriola Island RCMP urge anyone who suspects an impaired driver to call 9-1-1 immediately says Cst Mark Biggar.
