Gabriola Players
In 2005 the newly-formed Gabriola Players chose as their first production Morris Panych’s absurdly funny 7 Stories. Since then the group has performed more than 100 plays – full length, one acts, pantos and even some Shakespeare.
To mark this twentieth anniversary, the theatre group has decided to go back to the beginning, launching their new season with a revival of 7 Stories.
This production will be a staged reading. Director Wendy Phillips explains why: “We’ve talked to a lot of people in recent months who would like to give acting a go, but are stopped in their tracks by the thought of having to memorise lines. A staged reading means they do not have to do this. They’ll be performing with script in hand, so this is a perfect opportunity for newcomers to try acting. Honestly, I know they’ll be hooked.”
According to Wendy, the main reason for reviving 7 Stories is that it is “a very funny play by a very talented Canadian playwright”. It is, she says, a bonus that “there are more than a dozen roles, ranging from quite substantial to quite small, so there are plenty of options for toe dippers”.
Auditions for 7 Stories will be held at the Gabriola Arts & Heritage Centre on South Road (next to the post office) on Tuesday, September 16 from 7pm to 9pm. More information about the play and the roles to be cast can be found at gabriolaplayers.ca/7-stories-revival.
