Gabriola Sounder
Gabriola Fire Chief Will Sprogis has advised the Sounder that the island would be moving to Early Shift on Thursday, June 12.
Sprogis said on Wednesday, June 11 that with no precipitation expected in the next 12 hours, “we will be moving to the early shift starting tomorrow morning. Please note that a two-hour fire watch is required following the completion of any industrial work.”
He said Bylaw 102 will come into effect with the early shift.
Signage around Gabriola will be updated this evening, and the seasonal campfire ban will also take effect at that time.
This ban will remain in place until fall, contingent on weather conditions.
Sprogis added, “we are maintaining heightened vigilance on Gabriola following a wildfire sparked by an unattended campfire last night in the Nanaimo River area. We ask all Gabriola residents to stay alert and report any visible campfires immediately. Thank you for your attention and cooperation.”
