In 2019, a group of Gabriolans took the Gabriola Fire Protection Improvement District to the Supreme Court of BC, and the 2019 Fire Board election was declared, “of no effect” by the Court.

Here’s the voter turnout since that unique moment in Gabriola history:

2018 – 17 persons attended to vote.

2019 – original election – 444 votes cast

2019 – second election (after the Supreme Court overturned the first 2019 election results) – 274 votes cast.

2020 – Candidates acclaimed. No election. *Covid year

2021 – 257 votes cast

2022 – 430 votes cast

2023 – 2,054 votes cast.

2024 – Candidates acclaimed. No election.

Gabriola property owners, given the chance, will show up and vote in local elections. Especially when those elections have a direct impact on what those property owners are paying on their tax bill.

Unlike other local governments, the GFPID elections are annual, and on June 18, it will be time again for property owners to make their mark on the ballot.
