On September 20, the Gabriola Museum celebrated its 30th anniversary.
Snuneymuxw Elders David Lax̌iya Bodaly and Geraldine C’tasi:a Manson brought greetings to Gabriolans, speaking of the relationships built between the Museum and Snuneymuxw First Nation.
Brenda Joy, current Museum President, brought greetings to those gathered and remarked on how quickly five years has passed since the 25th anniversary, as that anniversary marked one of the first socially-distanced community gatherings held post COVID-19.
Historical Bus tours were held on both Saturday and Sunday guided by C’tascia.
Island Trustee Susan Yates spoke on behalf of the Islands Trust, remarking that the Museum is a special space that tells stories about this place and what we ant to know. “We all want to know about who came, here how did they build places here, how did they travel, where did their children go to school, how did they tell those stories, where are those stories?
“Right here is the best place I can think of to express our recognition for the past, for the present, and for the future and thinking about the kind of stewardship and knowledge that we need to know to go forward together as a community and with the guidance that we rely upon from Snuneymuxw First Nation.“
She thanked Stan and Maxine McRae for giving the land for the museum buildings, and for the conservation of the precious meadow behind the museum.
For their kindness, their big hearted presence, their quiet presence in this community, and said their legacy is a testament to community strength.
Joy recognized Janet Stobbs for her 14 years of service as the archivist and as a board member of the museum.
The museum recognized resident Bob Martin as the Museum’s Volunteer of the Year. Bob was recognized for his support made it possible for the museum to be able offer summer programs for the community and for his idea and initial work to put the archival calendar together that is going to benefit the museum for years to come.
