As mentioned in the story on the front page of this week’s  Sounder, the School District is still considering the cancellation of the late-entry French Immersion program.

Student placement in the Kindergarten-level French Immersion is done via lottery.

That might point to some that there is demand in the District for French Immersion.

Yet, for those who don’t get in via the lottery, the late-entry program is the only other option in the District for students to do French Immersion.

It’s not just about the lottery either. Late Entry provides an opportunty for Gabriola students in particular, as the ferry and transportation would be a barrier to younger students.

But students in Grade 6 are capable to take the ferry and the city bus – and they currently do – to independently get to Quarterway.

The District said last year that they would consider keeping the program in place if demand was sufficient.

Given that the District is still considering cancelling the late-entry program, caregivers who are considering enrolling their students into the late-entry program should be making their voices known, and soon.

Whether a student is going into Grade 6 this year, or in the next couple years, this is when caregivers will need to stand up for the program. Contact for the various departments, is on the District website at www.sd68.bc.ca/contact/
