Linda Black

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Linda Black, aged 80 years residing on Gabriola Island, British Columbia. Linda was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and cherished member of the Gabriola Island community.
Linda was born in Foremost, Alberta in 1945. She was raised on a farm a where by she learned the values of hard work and devotion to family ties. It was in Foremost, Alberta that Linda met the love of her life, Butch (George Black). Butch and Linda were married for 59 years before his passing in September of 2022.
Linda was predeceased by Butch, her father Arvin (Tie Hirsche), her mother Alverna Mortimer, her brother Reid Hirsche, granddaughter Amanda Black and is survived by her siblings Lynn Hirsche, Cherie Webber and Wendy Lortie and their children and grandchildren; Linda’s children Rick, Greg, and Michele; her daughter-in-law Veronica, her son-in-law Chris, her grandchildren Justin, Brandy, Nathaniel, Ruth, Brandon, Kael, and Chloe; and many great-grandchildren who brought her endless joy.
Family was Linda’s greatest priority, and her home was where family gathered together during the holidays to share in many wonderful family traditions with her kids, grandkids and great grandkids.
Linda’s passion for plants and flowers blossomed into the well-loved Wheelbarrel Nursery, which she owned and operated on Gabriola Island for well over 20 years.
Her spirit for hard work curated a meticulous garden filled with colourful foliage and blooms all year round. Her green thumb and deep gardening knowledge made the nursery a treasured part of Gabriola Island, and her legacy continues to bloom in gardens across the community.
She will be remembered for her grit, kindness, generous spirit and her endless devotion to family.
A celebration of life will be held at the home on Sunday, October 19, 2025 at noon.
The family would like to invite close friends of Linda and family members to share in the service.
The family would like to thank the palliative care team at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital for their kindness and devoted care before her passing.
