Gabriola Commons

The beloved Poetry Yurt on the Commons has been generously gifted to the Gabriola Commons by Poetry Gabriola Society. To support the ongoing legacy of the yurt as a rentable venue, the Commons has formed a new team of volunteers called the Yurt Keepers, who will be the stewards of all things to do with the yurt. The Yurt Keepers team is seeking several additional members who are willing to volunteer to support the yurt in its next chapter. This team of volunteers is crucial for the continued existence of the yurt on the Commons.

Tasks that are the shared responsibility of the Yurt Keepers team include: organizing work bees, maintenance, routine cleanliness/security checks, fundraising, reporting at monthly council meetings and managing bookings.

The yurt’s original wood stove was removed by a trio of strong volunteers in early March, as it was outdated and couldn’t meet safety requirements. The Yurt Keepers will be focusing on fundraising to support installing a new heating system later this year, as well as for other much-needed upgrades.

The Yurt Keepers aim to make the yurt an ideal rentable space for meetings, classes and workshops for our community. The Poetry Yurt is currently available to book beginning in July, when heating will not be necessary to comfortably gather inside. The Yurt Keepers hope to have a new heating system in place by the fall of this year. Please visit www.gabriolacommons.ca/facilities to book the yurt this summer.

There will be a Spring Cleaning Work Bee to give the yurt a fresh glow on Saturday, May 24th, from 10am-12pm. Bring your tallest ladder, long-handled scrubber brushes with buckets and hoses, if you have them. Lunch for all volunteers in the farmhouse to follow, from 12-1pm!
