Gabriola Island, with its rich tapestry of artists, eccentrics, and community-minded individuals, is preparing to host a Pride celebration on June 14th at Ravenskill Orchards. This event is more than a festivity; it’s a testament to the island’s evolving inclusivity and a beacon for those seeking acceptance and community.

As a newcomer to both Gabriola and British Columbia, I’ve been enveloped by the island’s warmth and openness. My move here wasn’t under the happiest circumstances, but the community’s embrace made the transition smoother. Embracing my nature as a social butterfly, I quickly connected with various groups, leading to the formation of the ‘Gender Tides’ collective. We’ve organized events at the Gabriola Theatre Centre and are brimming with ideas for the future. Now, I’m honored to be part of the committee organizing Gabriola Pride 2025.

Reflecting on the island’s history, longtime resident Emily Carson-Apstein shared, “I grew up on Gabriola in the 90s, and having a pride celebration would have been life-changing! Because of the stigma surrounding queer identities and gender diversity, it took decades to figure out who I am and become comfortable with that. The open discussion these days is also attracting some fear-based ignorant responses, and I hope those who have been misinformed can see we’re just here to spread joy and help everyone be their authentic selves.”

It’s essential to recognize that while Gabriola has made strides in inclusivity, challenges persist. A report by the City of Vancouver’s Council found 1 in 4 queer and trans youth in BC are forced out of their homes due to severe family conflict. Some parents express concerns about their queer teenagers facing discrimination on the island, impacting their mental health. These concerns underscore the importance of events like Pride, which foster understanding, acceptance, and community support.

The Pride celebration promises a day filled with joy and connection:

The time: 1 PM – 8 PM

The location: Ravenskill Orchards (Coats Road)

Some of what you can expect at the event include: Live performances from local stand-up comics, singer-songwriters, and bands, a DJ-led dance party to conclude the festivities, Ho-Jo’s food truck to satiate your cravings, informational tables from local groups on Gabriola and Vancouver Island, a dedicated kids’ zone with engaging activities, Ravenskill Orchard and Gabbie’s Cidery open for business.

This free event is made possible through community support. Nestor’s Market has generously donated snacks and bottled water for our performers. While attendance is free, donations are welcomed, with proceeds supporting the performers after covering event costs.

We invite community members to:

Volunteer: Assist with event setup, general support during the event, or help with post-event cleanup.

Promote: Share our posts from the Gabriola Pride Society social media page to spread the word.

Advocate: Continue being allies by speaking up for what’s right and addressing unacceptable behavior.

Join us in celebrating love, diversity, and community spirit. Let’s make Gabriola Pride 2025 a memorable and unifying event for all.
