Dibs Barisic Sprem

Associate Festival Producer

The Gabriola Theatre Festival presented by the Gabriola Theatre Centre (GTC) is fast approaching, and tickets are selling fast – so get them while you can!

Five artists are each performing their plays twice throughout the week (26th-30th August). One of the artists is katie-Ellen Humphries, from Victoria. Humphries was recently interviewed by the Associate Festival Producer about her show, and her work. Their show, ‘No Worries If Not’ will be at the GTC on Thursday 28th Aug at 7pm, & Friday 29th Aug at 5pm.

What do you want the audience to take away from your show?

My ultimate wish is that the audience leaves the theatre full of the special endorphins that come from sharing a laugh LIVE in community. I’d be thrilled if anyone in attendance felt their shoulders relax a little from feeling the vibrations of laughter around them. Second to that, it means a lot to me when people share that the show inspired them to be honest, with themselves and/or someone else, about what they need.

What’s your favourite line of dialogue and why?.

Flirting is the most fun thing you can do with another person aside from two-man luge and who has the time? I like this line because it’s a mix of profound truth and utter silliness – a beloved combo.

What’s your process for memorizing lines?

I learn lines the same way I’ve learned just about everything from handwriting and multiplication* to interpersonal communication – repetition. I also almost exclusively perform material I’ve written myself, so not only does that make memorization a lot easier, if I mess up my lines I have an in with the author. (*don’t quiz me on my times tables please, it’s been a minute)

What has been the biggest challenge or highlight of working on this production?

No Worries If Not is the most vulnerable work I’ve ever done and also the most rewarding. It’s been incredible to share some of my personal shortcomings and struggles and to have other people see themselves or people they know. Performing the show also keeps me accountable. Every show acts as a reminder of a lesson I learned and patterns I have to actively work at to not repeat.

What do you enjoy most about being on stage?

My favourite thing about being on stage is making an audience laugh. To create a beautiful tension and know just the right moment to break it and to get that unconscious reaction – there’s nothing quite like it. The thing that’s most important to me when I perform is connection. The idea that folks would leave their home and gather together at the same time in the same place for a shared experience is so special. I find it means more and more to me the longer I do this.

If you could have any superpower related to acting, what would it be?

Confidence.

The GTC is still looking for volunteers to help with the box office, concession stand, and to usher the audience for the festival. Get in touch through their website if you’re interested.www.gabriolatheatrecentre.ca
