A friend once advised me to only write to the local paper to thank someone. However, I believe it’s important to speak up when you feel strongly about an issue.
There is an upcoming election for the Gabriola Fire Improvement District this June 18th—it’s a big deal for our community! This election is not just about electing three Trustees; it’s about a chance to address some serious issues with the current board and bring about change. Let’s be honest—the board has been dysfunctional and frustratingly non transparent for years now. Attend any GFPID meeting and the defensiveness & lack of basic transparency is shocking. The firefighters have unionized, costs have soared and there is an ongoing Supreme Court Civil suit against the Fire Chief, GFPID Chair, and the Board of Trustees, alleging a “culture of intimidation and hostility at the Gabriola Fire Department”
My views on the fire department’s upper management in no way affect my respect for our firefighters and first responders.
The board’s actions have led to several significant problems within the department. Their defensiveness has created an atmosphere of distrust and secrecy, making it difficult for the public and firefighters to communicate effectively with leadership. The unionization of the firefighters can be seen as a direct response to the lack of support from the board, indicating deeper issues of dissatisfaction and unrest.
Over the past five years, the budget has increased significantly, and the current board of Trustees are planning further increases.
Additionally, the Supreme Court Civil suit highlights serious allegations that may involve misconduct or poor management at the top. This legal battle not only distracts from the primary mission of the department but also tarnishes its public image. The ongoing litigation will undoubtedly place additional financial strain on the department. The current board has already spent tens of thousands of taxpayers’ money because they have been forced by FOI requests to release information that, in most cases, should be public.
The cost of all these issues and mismanagement ultimately falls on the taxpayers.
The board’s refusal to address these concerns has worsened tensions, reducing trust among department members and the public. Addressing these issues with transparency and collaboration is what is needed for restoring trust and ensuring the effective operation of firefighting services.
It’s time for fresh ideas and a new direction to get things back on track.
We have an opportunity to elect candidates who prioritize community values and will bring some necessary changes. I will be voting for candidates who have the integrity to address those changes and bring about needed change.
Honestly, elections like this remind us just how important it is to get involved in local governance. By showing up, staying informed, and casting your vote, you’re contributing to making our community stronger and better. Visit the website gfpidchronicles.ca to stay informed. Let’s spread the word, push for change, and make sure everyone has their voice heard—it’s our one chance to turn things around!
