C Mark Smith
1940-2022
Mark was born and grew up in Indiana. As a youth, he played the trumpet and was a photographer and reporter for his local paper. He attended Indiana University, and studied English and languages. After graduation, he worked for IBM in management education, and he and his family lived several places in the US. He took an early retirement and started his next adventure as a conflict management consultant, which took him all over the world. He eventually retired from consulting, came to visit Marlana and Bob, and decided to make a new life on Gabriola Island.
Mark was an intelligent, funny, supportive man. He had a life-long love of reading and playing chess. He enjoyed all aspects of amateur theatre: acting, directing, the technical side and writing plays. He appreciated listening to music, particularly Classical, Choral and Jazz. He delighted in travel, preparing and eating good food, drinking good wine, and the company of friends. He enjoyed playing bridge. He was a weaver, and spent many happy hours at his loom.
Mark died peacefully on August 6 at his home in Nanaimo. He is survived by his partner, Anne, and their dog, Fan; his daughters, granddaughters and great-grandsons; siblings, nieces and nephews, and friends all over the world. There will be a Celebration of Life at the Gabriola Golf Club on Saturday, October 8th between 2 and 4 pm.
