In March 2023, the Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) began allowing RDN curbside collection customers to put yard waste into their green-lidded organics cart.

The service level expansion applied to all single-family dwellings in the RDN and is included in residents’ annual utility fee.

Since then, the RDN has been monitoring, listening and asking residents for their input on how curbside yard waste collection could be improved and expanded, to fit residents’ individual needs.

From the feedback received to date, there is continued support for expanded organics service.

According to the RDN’s Expanded Organics Yard Waste check-ins this spring and summer with customers at the landfill, transfer station, at community events and online, roughly two thirds of RDN residents who took the survey would like the option of an organics cart larger than 100L.

The RDN has developed an optional organics cart upsize program, which allows residents to choose to upsize their organics cart to fit their individual needs.

Residents can now upsize to a 240L organics cart or add an additional 240L organics cart to their service.

As of October 28, 2024, residents can pre-order their larger organics cart. For those who pre-order by November 30, the exchange fee will be discounted by $25.

Those who complete the pre-order by November 8 have a chance to win a prize: five households will have their curbside collection fees waived for two years – valued at over $400.

RDN Curbside staff will be at GIRO on Gabriola this Saturday November 9 from 9:30 am to 2pm to answer questions about the Expanded Organics Promotion that is running until November 30.

There is also an ad in the print edition of the Sounder regarding the promotion.
