Adrian Thomson
(Philip) Adrian Thomson passed away peacefully in his Gabriola home with his children at his side on Monday, October 24th, 2022 at the age of 89.
Born in Powell River to John Garfield and Mary Louise, the family moved to Vancouver where he went to Edith Cavell Elementary and King George High School. He was an exceptional swimmer and sailor, and enjoyed many adventures with friends from RVYC.
In his youth he also enjoyed skiing at Grouse Mountain which he accessed by hiking up the mountain before the original gondola was installed.
In 1970 he married a fellow sailor Patricia (nee Maitland) and they raised two children in Vancouver. After divorcing in 1983, Adrian moved to Gabriola Island to reside on the property his parents had purchased in the 1950s as a summer home. Like his father, Adrian was a talented woodworker and he spent countless years expanding the family cabin to make a beautiful home on Taylor Bay and building furniture for his children and friends.
Adrian was also an avid cyclist and spent much of his free time mapping out the trails on Gabriola and exploring abroad on two wheels. Many of his closest friends were met through his love of cycling and the annual tours in Mexico. Adrian is survived by his children Karyn (Gerald) and Ian (Alanah), as well as his four grandchildren Ellis, Anders, Linden and Anamika.
He is predeceased by his ex-wife, Patricia and sister, Charlotte Borgen.
Adrian’s family would like to extend a sincere thank you to his Gabriola community and particularly the volunteers at Drivers to Doctors and Meals on Wheels, and the amazing health professionals who have made this past year the best possible. A gathering for friends and family will be planned for the near future.
