Gabriola Players – Don Moser and Wendy Phillips in Kristen Da Silva’s play ‘Beyond the Sea’. Four performances this month at the Rollo Centre.
Gabriola Players
Gabriola Players is very proud to be introducing islanders to the work of Canadian playwright Kristen Da Silva this month with a production of her delightful play Beyond the Sea.
The play, described as “a perfect balance of wit and empathy”, introduces us to recently-single Theo, a man with some serious self-image problems, and Gwen, a witty widow who works the ticket booth for a boat tour company. Neither suspects when they meet that this chance encounter could change both their lives.
As described by director Kerry Woodrow: “Over the course of the play these two characters take us on a journey as they discover an unexpected bond between them. We are privileged to witness a relationship spark to life and begin to blossom before our eyes. This is the very last chance for at least one of them, but is this meeting enough to bring them together?”
Da Silva’s plays have been compared to the work of Canadian comedy legend Norm Foster. Foster himself says of her work: “It’s very difficult to write comedy, and Kristen Da Silva knows how to write comedy.”
Welcoming the opportunity to showcase Da Silva’s work, Gabriola Players president Miranda Holmes says: “Any time is a good time to be supporting Canadian playwrights, but perhaps no time is better than right now. This may be the first play by Da Silva that we’ve tackled, but it certainly won’t be the last.”
There will be four performances of Beyond the Sea at the Rollo Centre next month: Thursday to Saturday, April 10 to 12 at 7pm and Sunday, April 13 at 2pm. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at gabriolaplayers.ca.
Please note that, for the safety of all, audience members will be required to wear masks.
