Charles Sinclair Dick

1945-2022

Charles made the brave choice to end his life at home with medical assistance rather than live to the end of Alzheimer’s.  On the afternoon of November 9th, he smoked one last cigar and enjoyed a glass of red wine before passing away peacefully, surrounded by loving relatives.

He was born in Edmonton and lived in several towns and cities to pursue a number of different jobs over the years.  Each house he lived in was another chance to renovate – something he excelled at!

Charles and his wife Sigrid retired from the Vancouver school board to Gabriola in 2005 to live close to his son Heron, Ila, his grandchildren Bryn and Nisha, and several other relatives.  Charles was predeceased by son Julian and leaves behind youngest son Ethan in Nova Scotia.

Charles loved Gabriola for so many reasons – the beautiful beach and forest walks, the creative community of artists (he has an impressive collection of Gabriola paintings and sculptures!) and the small town social scene.  In the heyday of the Hive coffee bar, Charles spent many enjoyable hours holding court with whomever had a story to tell or an issue to debate.  He was a good listener with a goofy sense of humour.

A family celebration of life has taken place.  His cremated remains will be lovingly scattered in his favourite spots.

Donations to GROWLS in his honour would be very welcome.

Henry Goyert

1924-2022

Long time Gabriola resident Henry Goyert passed away in Victoria on May 6th at 97. Born in Berlin in 1924, he came to Canada in 1952 where he and his family eventually made their home in Kitimat BC. He retired to Gabriola in 1980 after spending summers there in the house he and his wife Dorothy built. Henry lived a long and fascinating life. He will be remembered by those who knew him as a gracious, fun-loving gentleman who loved Gabriola Island. He was a consummate story teller and looked for fun in everything he did. Although dementia diminished him in the last few years the essence of his personality and sense of humour stayed with him.

He is survived by his two sons, Peter (Jill) and Thomas (Cindy), his long-time close friend and partner Ann, grandchildren Josh, Stephanie and Michael as well as three great grandchildren, Jack, Sam and Zoe. He was predeceased by his wife Dorothy and grandson Ben.
