Dr. Verne Smith

Dr. Verne Smith, in his 94th year, passed away peacefully, at home, on 8 August, 2024, with his loving wife and family. With a positive, grateful spirit he died with dignity.

Verne was a dedicated, compassionate Doctor, practising medicine for 52 years, the last 15 at The Gabriola Medical Clinic, where his Saturday Clinic was popular.

He ‘followed his bliss’ and moved to Gabriola Island with his wife, Karen Cain, in 1994 and began building the penultimate wood shop and studio. From that shop came innovative furniture, garden structures, original sculptures, delicate wood jewelry and more. He was an early member of the Wooden Boat School and had built many boats over his lifetime, lastly the 39’ Tai Shan. He was always available to mentor others in wood craft. Verne was a member of the Gabriola Wood Guild and enjoyed their meetings and exhibiting his woodwork at their annual show.

He had a prodigious memory for poetry as well as medicine and told many interesting stories of his early adventures. His father, a veterinarian, was a major influence his life. Verne’s hero was Thomas Edison.

This beautiful island and artistic community suited him, he found a place here with like minded artists, makers, musicians, writers and he set his roots deeply.

Verne is survived by his wife of 37 years, Karen; his three children, Kelly, Leslie and Ian; son-in-law, Grant Phillips, stepson, Eden; and 7 grandchildren, Lauren, Leigh, Genoa, Jordyn, Georgia, Harrison, Jack; and great grandson, Lupo.

Predeceased by his first wife, Bernadine.

Verne’s family would like to extend their appreciation and gratitude to Dr Tracy Thorne, Gabriola Health Clinic, community nurses, Maureen, Jesse, firefighters, paramedics, Exercise coach Steve, and the Gabriola home care team for their care over the past years.
