Ellen Elizabeth Mills
Nov. 2, 1949 – Dec. 18, 2022
Ellen was born in Montreal, daughter to parents Weldon and Kathleen White. She is survived by her husband, Gary of 42 years, son Anthony and granddaughter, Natalie, sisters, Elaine White (Ken), Stephanie Dodds (Rob), brothers, Stephen White, Doug White (Tara) and Art White (Dawn) and numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, and twin brothers, Walter and John White.
Ellen was a long-time member of Eastern Star, Kelowna Chapter #62 and an affiliate member of Langley Chapter #50 where she held many positions including Warder and Marshall. She was also a member of Rebekah Lodge #66 Peace Arch for over 20 years where she held the position Noble Grand.
Ellen served on the IOOF board for the King George Seniors Home for many years and volunteered with Gabriola Auxiliary for Island Health Care Society as well as financial advisor for People For A Healthy Community. She was a mentor to many people, patiently explaining the intricacies of accounting, bookkeeping and office procedures as she had a long career as office manager and bookkeeper and the go-to person when problems needed solving.
Ellen and Gary were travellers and adventurers. Bare boat sailing the Aegean Sea, Greek Islands, Mediterranean Sea and the Carribean Sea as well as barging the River Lot in France with friends, George and Diane, and Peter and Denyse. Motorcar trips with friends Henri and Roz, starting at the Netherlands, through Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, France, Spain and Italy, evoked many fond memories for Ellen and Gary. Their travels took them to all parts of Canada, Hawaii and trailering to the tip of California Baja. They spent many winters in Palm Springs waking up to bright sunshine. The wonders we have seen in Istanbul, Amsterdam, London, Paris, Barcelona, Athens, Rome, Venice, Mexico City, Florence. Ahh, Florence… and too many others to mention.
In 2007, Ellen and Gary decided to retire and a move to Gabriola was their next destination, but only if a “Studio” was built. So be it. Ellen was a crafter, knitter, sewer, crocheter and quilter, belonging to Gabriola Quilters, Gather ‘n Stitch and the Prayer Shawl groups. Ellen spent thousands of hours over the next 15 years happily making quilts, hats, sweaters, scarves, mitts and so much more. Her sisters and friends would visit often only to disappear into the “Studio” for days where chatter and laughter were constant. Gary was allowed entry only to bring tea and biscuits.
Ellen had that rare quality of listening to and hearing people without prejudice or preconceived notions. Her empathy, humour and generous soul endeared her to all who met her. She will be remembered by all whose life she touched.
