Members of the Gabriola Fery Advisory Committee (FAC) recently met with an Operations Manager from the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI) to discuss safety issues around the Descanso Bay ferry terminal on Gabriola.

Media staff with MOTI confirmed that there was a meeting to discuss the need for a crosswalk from the terminal across Easthom Road; to evaluate the location of the stop sign on Easthom (to determine if it is in the right location for visibility); and to continue considering options for improved pedestrian connections from the terminal up North Road.

The FAC has also recommended that BCFerries consider erecting additional signage for vehicular traffic debarking the ferry that says “Watch for Pedestrians.” MOTI staff said they understand that BC Ferries is also looking into the addition of the signage based on the FAC recommendation.

There is no consideration being made to refresh the yellow and white pavement lines at the ferry terminal.

At this time, refreshing the pavement marking lines are not being considered as part of the immediate discussion with the Ferry Advisory Committee.

Local MOTI reps will continue to monitor the status of the line paint on Gabriola for re-application of lines in the future.
