On Sunday, April 3 at 7pm, a person arrived at Gabriola RCMP detachment after being assaulted with a weapon near his home on South Road.

The victim – a senior  was taken by BC Ambulance to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. Media representatives from BC Emergency Health Services said three paramedic ground units were involved in the response (one on Gabriola, and two in Nanaimo) and transported the victim to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. BC EHS said an air ambulance was requested, however, air ambulance crews were responding to other critical, and life-threatening calls at the time. RCMP did not state the nature of the assault, or provide details on the injuries sustained by the victim.

RCMP say the person accused was located a short time later on Gabriola Island.

He was arrested for aggravated assault and later released with protective conditions, including having no go conditions to Gabriola Island.

The two individuals are known to each other.  This is believed to be an isolated incident and there is no risk to the public. RCMP asked if anyone has information in relation to this incident, please contact the Gabriola RCMP at 250-247-8333 or through the anonymous line at Nanaimo Crime Stoppers.
