Grant ‘Barry’ Armstrong
We are sad to share that Grant “Barry” Armstrong passed away on the evening of Sunday March 24th at his home on Gabriola Island following a decline in his health over the past few months.
Barry was born in Melfort Saskatchewan and was the youngest of three brothers Walter and Raymond.
A couple years after the death of his mother Clara Andall when he was a boy his father Len remarried Edith and suddenly Barry had four step sisters; Judy, Joan, Sandy and Arlene.
His first career was as an electrician followed by a commercial fisherman when his family moved to BC in 1985.
Barry captained his boat the Casino from 1985 to 1998 and fished from the mouth of the Fraser to Haida Gwaii.
In 2000 Barry and his wife moved to Gabriola Island to retire where they enjoyed dog walks and trips to the beach.
In the summer when conditions were perfect Barry would ride his Honda Goldwing around Gabriola and spend the evening listening to the frogs. An avid Toronto Blue Jays and Vancouver Canucks fan he never missed watching a game and enjoyed conversations about his favourite players.
Barry is survived by his wife Shirley of 54 years, loyal dog “Willow,” daughter Nicole, son Michael (Andrea) and his three granddaughters Aaliyah, Lilah and Olivia.
Barry will be greatly missed by this family and those in his community, in lieu of flowers, please consider donations in his name to the Canuck Place Children’s Hospice.
