Gabriola Fire Chief Will Sprogis is calling on members of the public to voice concerns to the Transportation Ministry over the state of the roads on Gabriola.

He made the request during his report to the Board of the Gabriola Fire Protection Improvement District.

This past month, Sprogis did a tour of the roads with a representative of the Ministry. This included showing where – earlier this year – the ladder truck from the Gabriola Fire Department had slid into the ditch on North Road.

The truck was a write-off. The driver of the truck was not seriously injured.

Sprogis said the incident had happened when the truck hit a rough patch on the road while moving over to let an oncoming car pass, and was sucked into the ditch by the soft shoulder.

He showed this location, as well as other spots where the shoulder has become dangerously eroded from the road surface.

Sprogis is asking for a letter campaign from the public asking the Ministry to resurface Gabriola roads, and build the shoulders back up. He said letters can be emailed to gilbert.thompson@gov.bc.ca with a cc to info@gabriolafire.ca

Recruitment Drive on for Fire Hall #2

Sprogis also said during his report that the Department is currently recruiting for members to bring up the numbers at Hall #2 on the south end of Gabriola.

He said Hall #1 on Church Street is currently full, but the Department is looking for more members to add to the Hall #2.

To apply, head to the Gabriola Fire web site at www.gabriolafire.ca and click on the recruitment tab.

Applications will close on May 13.
