James (Jim) Alfred Heise
Sept. 4, 1951 – June 23, 2023
James (Jim) Alfred Heise passed away peacefully during the night of Friday, June 23rd. Jim leaves behind his loving partner, Leni, his children- Callista, Garnet, Adrian, and Jamie-Sue and his grandchildren – Taliah, Willow, and Chloe.
Born and raised in northern British Columbia with his two brothers and two sisters, Jim went on to become a heavy-duty mechanic for many years before moving to and retiring on Gabriola, where he has become a much-loved member of the community. During the rare moments Jim went off-island, he enjoyed visiting his brother’s ranch in Williams Lake.
Jim was an active diver, spending much of his free time in the waters around Vancouver Island. Active in both body and mind, Jim was an avid ball-hockey player (even into his sixties), and read countless books throughout his life. Whether under the waves or lost in one of Terry Pratchett’s many novels, Jim sought out mystery and intrigue from the world around him.
He owed his sharp, quirky wit to the countless fantasy novels he read, and from his love of watching Monty Python. Friends and family alike joined him on bizarre and unforgettable quests in Dungeons & Dragons campaigns that he would delight in hosting. Jim was ever the mood maker in a crowd, shooting off jolly quips or recounting wild tales of his youth, much to the amusement of anyone within earshot.
With his passing, the larger-than-life exploits of his younger years have now made him into a true legend of Gabriola. Jim’s grand adventures in life were surpassed in scale only by the sheer love and adoration he held for his children, family, and friends- he will be dearly missed.
