James Randolph (Randy) Young

May 4, 1941 – Oct. 30, 2024

Randy was born in Saskatoon, SK but spent his formative years on Saltspring Island before moving to Vancouver. He met his wife Lynne at UBC and after graduating with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, they spent two years in England where he obtained a Masters of Science in Operational Research and Management Studies from Imperial College in London. They returned to B.C. where their daughters Carolyn and Kathryn were born.

Randy & family first came to Gabriola in 1973 and were finally able to realize their retirement dream on the island in 1994. Over the last 30 years, Randy was involved in numerous volunteer organizations which included Rate Payers & Residents Assoc; Well Watchers; Ferry Advisory Committee; Gabriola Players (lighting support); he was the founder of the Canada Day Potato Cannon Contest; and was proud of his work enhancing access to the public trail systems through GaLTT.

Randy had a lifelong passion for computer programming, gardening and fixing anything & everything. He built many boats and shared his passion for fishing with his daughter Carolyn, mapping and trails with his daughter Kathryn, advanced mathematics with his granddaughter Emilie and a lifetime of adventures with his wife of over 60 years, Lynne.
