Muriel Matilda Herne

It is always difficult saying goodbye to someone we love and cherish. Family and friends must say goodbye to their beloved Muriel Matilda Herne (nee Llewellyn) of St. Catharines Ontario, who passed away at the age of 100 on February 27, 2025.

Muriel was predeceased by her husband Donald Herne, son Jeffery and first husband Rector Murphy.

She is survived by her daughter Susan Brown, her brother Ronnie (Bernice) and their family, stepsons Cameron, Richard (Cheryl), and David, as well as grandsons Simon and Shannon and two great grandchildren.

Muriel faced many challenges in her life and met them all with a steely determination putting one foot in front of the other. Above all, she maintained her dignity and grace.

She was a lifelong member of the Anglican church attending at St. Georges. She served as a warden for her church and Stephen minister for many years alongside her dear friend Gerry. Muriel and her husband Donald volunteered at the church’s breakfast for about twenty years, rising at five a.m. to do so. She has a long and unacknowledged history of kindness and service to others with no accolades or expectation of return.

“I would like to thank my mother, for passing along that determination, self reliance, love of gardening, a DIY attitude, for her care and love for me through the hard years and the easy ones. Words cannot express how much I will miss her. I think of her every day.”

The family would like to thank the staff of the Royal Henley Retirement Residence and Dr. Jayawardene for their compassionate care and support.

A private family ceremony will be held at her church, and on Gabriola.
