Huxley Community Park is joining a list of locations on Gabriola where dogs must be on leash, per a change from the Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN).
This comes from a recommendation made at the February meeting of the RDN’s Parks and Open Spaces Advisory Committee (POSAC).
The RDN Parks Department confirmed to the Sounder this past week that the park is now both an on-leash and a no-dogs-permitted park, depending on which part of the park a person is in.
Dogs are not permitted in the tennis courts, on the Multi-Sport court, in the skate park or in the playground area.
Dogs are permitted – if on leash – in all other areas of the park.
Staff will be updating the signage in Huxley Community Park to reflect this.
Other locations on Gabriola where dogs must be on leash include all three provincial parks; the Elder Cedar (S’ul-hween X’pey) Nature Reserve; the McRae Land Conservation Area; Descanso Bay Regional Park; and Rollo McLay Sports Fields when there are games being played on the field.
In most other parts of Gabriola, there is no leash requirement for dogs, though the bylaw does require that a dog be under the control of the owner.
Aggressive dogs or dogs at large in all RDN Electoral Areas should be reported to our animal control contractor Coastal Animal Control Services of BC at 1-888-754-1397 or cacs@telus.net.
