Robert Bolivar Castell

June 15, 1931 to July 21, 2023

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Robert (Bob) Bolivar Castell.

Robert was born June 15, 1931, in Smithers, BC, and married his beloved wife of 60 years, Betty, in Vancouver, 1955.

Along with Betty and their three daughters, Debbie, Linda, and Kim, the family moved to Gabriola Island in 1967.

Robert remained a Gabriola resident for the remaining 56 years of his life, working on the Island first as a shipwright at Withey’s Shipyard and later became an electrician.

He was very active in the Gabriola community and was instrumental in the creation of the islands ambulance service and fire department where he served as a volunteer for many years.

Robert’s passions were woodworking, sailing, gardening, reading and traveling with Betty in their RV.

Thanks to the loving support of the Gabriola community, Robert was able to remain at home on his beloved island until his passing on July 21, 2023, at the age of 92.

His family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Thorne and the Home Support Team. A heartfelt thanks to Giovanni for his loving care and daily visits as well as to his longtime friend Svend.

Robert was predeceased by his wife, Betty, in 2014, grandson, Bradley, in 2011 and daughter, Debbie, in 2023. He will be missed by his surviving daughters, Linda and Kim (Bob), six grandchildren, Michelle, Rebecca, Derek, Michael, Shannon and Jennifer as well as fifteen great-grandchildren.

A life well lived, and a great legacy left behind.

He will not be soon forgotten.
